Certified gasfitters in Wellington and the Hutt Valley
Gas appliance installation, gas fires and pipework across Wellington and the Hutt Valley
From a new gas fire to a hob that needs connecting, PGM are certified gasfitters in Wellington and the Hutt Valley, working on both natural gas and LPG. We have over 25 years in the trade, and every job ends with testing and a Gas Safety Certificate.

Gas fires and heating
If the lounge never quite warms up and the heat pump is not cutting it, a gas fire heats the room in minutes and holds it all evening. We supply and install flame-effect and freestanding fires, on natural gas or LPG.
Installation is the full job. We set the fire, run the gas line to it, flue it (the vent that carries exhaust outside), then commission and test it.
If you already have a fire, we service them too. A service cleans the burner and fan, and checks the flue and seals.
If you are not sure which fire suits your room, call us on 021 607 658 and describe it.

Whether it is a new hob to connect or an oven going in, we install gas hobs, cooktops, ovens and heaters, on natural gas and LPG. New appliances, like-for-like swaps, or moving one to a different spot in the kitchen.
If a hob is lighting unevenly or a heater smells different than it used to, that is a service. It cleans the burner, and a serviced appliance burns cleaner and lasts longer. Worth doing every couple of years.
Every installation is certified. You get a Gas Safety Certificate, which you need for insurance and when you sell.
What we install and service
- Gas hobs and cooktops

Gas lines and pipework
We handle gas line installation and repair across Wellington and the Hutt Valley:
- New gas lines
- Relocations
- Repairs
- LPG gas fitting
Pipework is certified work. A new run for a califont (a wall-mounted gas hot water unit) or a repair on an old steel line both end with testing and a certificate.
If you are planning a kitchen or an outdoor fire, get the gas line in at the right stage and you are not opening up finished walls later.
What a gasfitter costs in Wellington
Smaller gasfitting jobs are charged at an hourly rate plus materials. Bigger jobs, like a gas fire or a new gas line, are quoted whole so you have the price before we start. Our rates are plus GST:

Quoted up front
What moves the price on a gas job: the length of the pipe run, access under the floor or through walls, flueing for fires, and whether old pipework has to be replaced before new work can be certified. We tell you which of those apply before we start.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a gasfitter cost?
We charge $115 plus GST for the first hour on site and $95 plus GST for each hour after that, plus materials. That covers most smaller gasfitting work. Bigger jobs like a gas fire installation or a new gas line are quoted as a whole job before we start, so you have the price in advance.
What do gasfitters charge per hour in NZ?
Hourly rates vary by region and by the job. Ours are $115 plus GST for the first hour and $95 plus GST for every hour after that, plus materials. We publish them so you can compare before you ring around.
How much is a small gas fitting job?
Connecting a hob, swapping a gas heater like for like or checking an appliance over is usually an hour or two on site plus the fittings. Ring us on 021 607 658 and describe the job. We will tell you whether it is charged hourly or quoted as a whole job.
Do I need a certified gasfitter in NZ?
Yes. Gasfitting is regulated work in New Zealand, and most of it is illegal to do yourself. A certified gasfitter issues a Gas Safety Certificate for the work, which insurers and buyers will ask to see.
What is the difference between natural gas and LPG?
Natural gas is piped to your house from the street network, which covers some Wellington and Hutt Valley suburbs but not all. LPG comes in bottles delivered to your place, so it works anywhere. We install and service appliances on both.
What should I do if I smell gas?
Turn the gas off at the meter or bottle, open windows and doors, and do not use flames or electrical switches. If the smell is strong, call 111 or your gas supplier's emergency line. Once it is safe, we can find and repair the leak and certify the system.
Are you licensed and certified?
Yes. Steve holds the ticket for both gasfitting and plumbing, so the gas fitter and the plumber on your job are the same person, and the work is certified by us rather than split between two trades. Every gas job we do ends with a Gas Safety Certificate, which insurers and buyers will ask to see.
What suburbs do you cover?
We cover Wellington city, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt and Porirua, including Petone, Wainuiomata, Stokes Valley and Eastbourne. We are based in Wainuiomata and work business hours, Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 5:30. If you are not sure whether you are in range, ring us on 021 607 658 and ask.
Need gasfitting work done?
Tell us about the job and we will come back with a straight answer and a price.
